Series Note
New to The False Positive? This is Part II of the series. You can read Part I here. The series will continue.
For twenty years, my entire professional world fit inside a laptop. A reliable internet connection, a quiet corner of the house, and a collection of text files, terminology databases, and dictionaries were enough to build a career.
I was never opposed to technology. Translators have always worked alongside it. The first machine translation systems changed our workflows. Translation memories changed the way we stored and reused knowledge. But those tools still depended on us. We built the databases and corrected the mistakes. Every entry carried a human decision behind it.
At some point, though, the relationship began to change. The systems were no longer just helping translators. They were beginning to take over parts of the work we had always done ourselves.
I started looking for another place where those same skills might still matter. The answer surprised me: helping train the very systems that were changing the profession I had spent two decades practicing.
This conversation continues in Part III.
Technology is the setting. Humanity is the subject.
